In this series, you will learn what books I recommend to my clients and coachees who want to improve their negotiation skills.

There will be five in total.

At the end of each book recommendation, you will find a brief insight into how I relate to the book and how I benefitted from the book (or my clients).

“Never Split the Difference” by Chris Voss — Why you should apply the BATNA tactic, explained by Chris Voss

Are you tired of losing at negotiations? Want to come out on top every time and feel respected at the same time? Look no further than “Never Split the Difference” by Chris Voss. Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator, shares his tried and true techniques for success in any negotiation.

One of the key takeaways from the book is the importance of empathy. By truly understanding the other party’s perspective and wants, you can better tailor your negotiation strategy to meet their needs and ultimately come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

Voss also stresses the power of using open-ended questions to get the other party talking and better understand their position. And when it comes to making a deal, Voss suggests using the “BATNA” approach — figuring out the Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement. This helps you determine your walk-away point and ensures that you don’t settle for less than what you truly want or deserve.

But perhaps the most crucial piece of advice from Voss is to avoid the temptation to split the difference. As he explains, this tactic often leads to a subpar outcome for both parties. Instead, focus on finding creative solutions that satisfy the needs of both sides.

Overall, “Never Split the Difference” is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their negotiation skills. With Voss’s expert guidance, you’ll be able to confidently navigate any negotiation and come out on top.

Personal insights and relation

I relate to the book “Never Split the Difference” in an exceptional way: It felt like coming home and made me feel “to have been right all the time with my exceptional approach in selling and negotiating — and teaching it”.

For almost two decades, I have worked with archetypes, like Chris Voss does, but more in a linguistic matter. And I recommend omitting the same word as Chris Voss, although my conclusion is derived more from a spiritual point of view.

I fell addicted to the no-oriented questions that I published a small book by myself, providing over 180 no-oriented questions for almost every area in business and private relationships.
